Mission and Programs
STEM Enrichment for Students and Teachers
The National Youth Science Center is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation established in 1983 to provide STEM-focused programs for students from all across the country and around the world. The NYSCenter’s flagship program, the National Youth Science Camp, is a four-week session in the mountains of West Virginia that combines some of the brightest students in the country with top-notch scientists for lectures and outdoor adventures. Many students return later in their own STEM careers as guest presenters and perpetuate the traditions of the camp.
The mission of the National Youth Science Center is to inspire lifelong engagement and ethical leadership in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related professions through its proven educational model for mentoring, challenging, and motivating students. By building communities among students, teachers, and professionals, NYSCenter programs complement, broaden, and enhance the traditional school curriculum leading to careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and related professions.
STEM Education
The NYSCenter supports a broad array of STEM Education programs, including natural science, environmental science, physical science, astronomy, computing science, and maker technologies.
Outdoor Adventures
The NYSCenter is located along the scenic Blackwater River and is near the Monongahela National Forest and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. Outdoor adventures include Mountain Biking, Caving, Rock Climbing, Backpacking, Hiking, Kayaking, and more.
Special Events
Many NYSCenter programs include special events that recognize the accomplishments of its participants. These special events are shared experiences that help develop a valuable sense of community and shared memories.
